The Concern:
Reproductive Health refers to the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being related to the reproductive system and its functions. It involves the ability to reproduce safely and effectively, as well as access to information, education and healthcare services related to reproductive health.
Primary school education is the cornerstone for any person to achieve economic and social independence. Most primary school girls perform poorly in their primary school education, and many do not reach the final year of their studies. We know that puberty is a key process for human development into adulthood, and for girls, it starts with the onset of menstruation during primary school. Unfortunately, many girls in Tanzania do not know what is happening to their bodies and why due to the stigma that still exists in our communities. We have then come to realize that most girls experience stress, fear, embarrassment, and social exclusion with the onset of menstruation. Many girls end up dropping out of school altogether.
Our Response:
Nguzo believes that imparting knowledge about women’s health and menstruation to both girls and boys will improve girls’ performance in school. Nguzo believes that the knowledge will not be enough if the girls will not have the proper equipment to handle their menses. We provide re-useable and environmentally sustainable pads to women and children, supplemented with educational outreach. Having the proper management in handling menstruation will help girls to stay at school without fear, worry, and stress and this will lead to them to the best performance in their studies and later guide in achieving their goals in the future.
