"DISABILITY IS NOT INABILITY, LET'S BE TOGETHER."

Our motto strongly addresses our inner core desire to empower the entire life and mankind of children with disabilities. Adolescence and adulthood can be improved through our support by preserving and encouraging quality health, equipping them with life skills to cope with different challenges they are facing, and grow economically in cooperative ways, hence a need to be together.

The Concern

Globally, there are 150 million children living with disabilities. They are often denied an education because they are the most vulnerable and excluded people in their communities.

How are children with disabilities excluded?

Children with disabilities are 10 times less likely to attend school than those without. Even if they attend school, they are more likely to drop out early while the level of schooling they receive is frequently below that of their peers. Children with disabilities are often unable to go to school because of unsuitable communities and among teachers about their learning needs, which is often fueled by prejudices around disability.

How are girls affected?

Girls with disabilities experience greater exclusion and injustices as a result of their disability and gender. They are less likely to go to school and are often considered a burden on the family because they are seen as a non-productive member of society. Providing these girls with an education that meets their needs can play a fundamental role in addressing the root causes of the discrimination they face.

Our Response

How does the Nguzo Women and Youth Foundation support students with disabilities?

Our organization is committed to ensuring that every child completes a quality, inclusive education without discrimination or exclusion. Our inclusive education program has supported children with disabilities who are in our partner schools. We help children with disabilities access primary school and secondary school that meets their needs. We also work closely with physiotherapists and rehabilitation centers to provide skills and training to help the children live independently.

Inclusion of Children With Disabilities in Health and Foundation of Life Skills Programs at Bomang'ombe - Hai DC

This project comes as the result of challenges observed after volunteering in selected primary schools projects with early adolescents. While on running the school programs especially on general hygiene and menstruation hygiene management we identified recently the presence of highly in need children with disabilities in the pilot schools.

Main Objective of the Project

The main objective is to include and empower children with disabilities through health and foundation of life skills programs with their families for a period of three (3) years.

Specific Objectives of the Project
  • To reach, mobilize, and empower about 100-150 children with disabilities, both girls and boys, in urban and rural streets in Hai District for a period of 36 calendar months i.e. three (3) years through health and foundation of life skills programs from April 2022 - April 2025.
  • To reach the families of respective children with disabilities in order to conduct needs assessment and empower for sustainable support of their children with disabilities.
  • Ensure continuity of health services by educating participants on health insurance schemes to improve their health.
Goals of the Project
  • To identify, mobilize, and do need assessments for children with disabilities.
  • To conduct training sessions to capacitate these children with disabilities with different matters related to their general and reproductive health, with foundation of life skills dependent on varying degrees of their disabilities.
  • To empower them and/or their families economically through life skills training and entrepreneurship activities.
  • To establish and run small entrepreneurship activities to improve their financial status.
  • To ensure sustainable health services through health insurance schemes.
Expected Outcomes of the Project (Indicators)

The following are intended outcomes if this program works as planned:

  • Needs assessments will identify exactly the need and potentiality of each child with a disability and pave a way for long running activities to build their capacities, hence improving their health and empowering their life.
  • Improve the quality of life of children with disabilities while in school and out of school.
  • Respective families of children with disabilities will be identified, with an assessment planned for future and long-term entrepreneurship activities to improve financial status, which will eventually help support their children.
  • The adolescents and youth with disabilities, both males and females, will be equipped with knowledge and life skills to address many health concerns and problems related to reproductive health services through structured schedules.
  • There will be a significant reduction of the number of adolescents with disabilities, both girls and boys, who engage in risk behavior, indicated by a reduction in early or forced marriages, early pregnancies, substance use and abuse, drunkenness, homosexuality, prostitution, and discrimination among the community.
  • Increased sense of awareness among the community on the existence of adolescent/youth friendly services through established entrepreneurship activities.
  • Increased utilization of Adolescents and Youths Friendly Reproductive Health Services in Service Delivery Points (SDPs)..
  • Strengthened networking and linkage between peer educators, families, community health workers, social welfare officers, facilities health care providers, and organizations in matters related to people with disabilities and youth empowerment.
  • Improved quality of health and socioeconomic status while ensuring environmental conservation.
Project Trajectory

The project is planned to be carried out in four phases and to be run for consecutive three (3) years.

PHASE I

PHASE II

To conduct scheduled training about foundation of life skills, avoidance of risk behaviors to improve quality of health, entrepreneurship mind set empowerment and incapacitate with peer educators skills to be champions in their respective families and communities.

PHASE III
